Insomnia – What To Do When You Can’t Sleep

Sometimes it’s really hard to get to sleep. Often there are obvious reasons for this like a particularly stressful day, or the neighbours are making a racket or it’s too hot or cold in the bedroom, or your bed partner is a damn fidget! But when there’s not really a clear reason why you just can’t seem to drop off and you’re tossing and turning all night until the early hours it helps to have a little strategy you can put into practice. I devised this one for myself and it really works so if you want a quick trip to dreamland, give it a go…

  • Get up.
  • Unless your bedroom is too cold, open the window and door, and pull back your bed sheets to cool down your bed.
  • Fluff up your pillow and turn it over.
  • Have a drink of water – not too much, maybe half a glass.
  • Go to the toilet.
  • Wash your hands and feet, dry them and apply moisturiser.
  • Shut the bedroom window and get back in bed.
  • Lying on your back with your hands by your sides, tense up the muscles in your toes for a couple of seconds and then release them and say to yourself in a sleepy voice inside your head, “My toes are SO tired”.
  • Repeat this for your calves: Tense, release, “My calves are SO tired”
  • Then the same for your thighs, buttocks, stomach, chest, hands and arms, shoulders, and then screw your face up and relax it.
  • Next, envisage slowly drawing an outline on the bed around your body starting and finishing at the top of your head.

By this point, the hamster wheel that was going round and round in your head earlier should have stopped and your body and mind will be ready for sleep if, in fact, you’re not already asleep. I find it works every time for me, and I hope it works for you.
